York Regional Police introduces inclusive dress and protocol procedure

York Regional Police’s progressive Dress and Protocol Procedure allows for personal expression while maintaining professionalism, public trust and operational effectiveness

As 2024 came to a close, York Regional Police implemented a progressive new Dress and Protocol Procedure, which makes space for inclusivity and personal expression while maintaining professionalism. This initiative is the result of extensive consultations with staff members and subject matter experts to create a gender-neutral policy that accommodates religious, cultural, and individual identity considerations.

The new protocol permits members to express their individuality through religious adornments, jewellery, tattoos, facial hair and hairstyle preferences. However, all personal dress and grooming choices must align with YRP’s standards of professionalism, operational effectiveness and personal safety.

“We recognized the need to modernize our dress regulations and still maintain the level of professionalism our communities have come to expect,” said Sergeant Karian Guimond, who played a key role in developing the new procedure. “To achieve this balance, YRP formed a working group of staff from across the service, taking into consideration research studies, legal guidance, human rights best practices and the importance of preserving public trust.”

To address potential conflicts, or if a member feels the stipulations in the new procedure do not allow for expression of their personal identity, the Dress and Standards Committee—a team of protocol officers overseen by Executive Services—will resolve issues as they arise, with exemptions granted for cultural, religious, creed or medical reasons.

“When a member of the public sees and interacts with a York Regional Police member, their first impression and trust may be impacted by that member’s appearance,” said Chief of Police Jim MacSween. “Presenting a polished and professional image reinforces public confidence and upholds YRP’s reputation for excellence.”

Ultimately, the updated policy gives our members the freedom to be themselves while maintaining professionalism – striking a balance between personal expression and public trust.
