Safety and Well-Being – Our People
To support the safety and well-being of our members and our community, York Regional Police (YRP) will:

Modernize key business processes and practices to enhance the effectiveness and safety of members
in 2023, YRP:
Automated the processing and management of workflow for provincial offence tickets, creating efficiencies for York Regional Police members
Implemented new technologies, such as eNotes, automated licence plate readers and new Business Intelligence dashboards, to assist members with inputting and accessing data relating to initiatives and investigations to effectively develop strategies, prepare for court, and enhance safety
Leveraged internal and external resources to identify and improve People Wellness and Talent frameworks for safety and well-being, including wellness services, disability management, and contract bargaining

Continue to develop member capabilities to proactively respond to emergencies and keep public order
in 2023, YRP:
Continued implementing member development programs which include specialized training, mentorship, and opportunities to try new roles within the organization
Enhanced joint training opportunities with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG) and other agencies relating to business continuity and emergency management
Increased sharing of information from specialized units to frontline members in order to enhance knowledge of crime trends and increase investigative capacities

Enrich and promote resources that support members’ psychological, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social health
in 2023, YRP:
Continued promotion of psychological health through programs such as peer support, meaningful work for members working with restrictions, and the hiring of a family support clinician
Introduced and promoted embedded wellness services such as physiotherapy and massage at various districts to assist with members physical health
Launched several new Internal Support Networks to promote spiritual and social health of our members
Created additional safe spaces for members to discuss wellness needs with wellness staff members
Safety and Well-Being – Our Community
To support the safety and well-being of our members and our community, York Regional Police (YRP) will:

Expand regional law enforcement and crime prevention strategies to address emerging and ongoing crime trends such as auto theft, guns and gangs, organized and violent crime
in 2023, YRP:
Launched a diversion program for adults to hold parties directly accountable for low-level offences and direct those who may be at risk of recidivism to the appropriate social program
Partnered with agencies, such as the Canada Border Services Agency, to recover stolen vehicles and combat auto-theft and organized crime
Expanded crime prevention efforts by meeting with community stakeholders to discuss current issues and hosted crime prevention education sessions and discussions with the community

Continue to collaborate with community partners to identify and prioritize risks that contribute to crime, victimization, and harm
in 2023, YRP:
Continued to foster partnerships with MAG in order to ensure best practices are incorporated into processes that will best serve the community
Collaborated with various social services to assist with addressing concerns and care of the unhoused community of York Region
Conducted joint investigations with various agencies on various projects targeting Human Trafficking (Project Norte) and Internet Child Exploitation (Project Limestone)

Implement a road safety strategy that ensures safe people, safe vehicles, and safe streets
in 2023, YRP:
Promoted various education (Project Always Be Careful (ABC)) and media campaigns (Be Safe – Be Seen) to ensure safety in our community
Continued enforcement and education relating to commercial, modified, and recreational motor vehicles to ensure safe vehicles on our roadways and trails
Provided recommendations, through the York Region Traffic Safety Strategy Committee, for new and enhanced traffic infrastructure which could reduce injury and fatal collisions to ensure safe streets
Recruitment and Retention – our people
To promote a people-first approach to recruit, retain and enhance talent to serve our community, YRP will:

Strengthen members’ knowledge, skills and abilities to support personal and professional growth
in 2023, YRP:
Increased opportunities for job secondments, training, and coaching to expand knowledge and experiences of members
Launched the Future of Leadership in Policing program, in partnership with Schulich ExecEd, providing leadership development opportunities for members
Expanded officer training to include components of investigation techniques relating Human Trafficking, Crimes Against Children, Sexual Assault, and Homicide

Provide flexible work arrangements to support member well-being
in 2023, YRP:
Expanded the compressed work-week program to more areas of the organization
Increased schedule flexibility by introducing flex-shift starts to vary work schedules for frontline officers
Updated the remote work policy to afford members the opportunity to work remotely fifty percent of the work week

Implement a people-first leadership framework to guide members’ career success
in 2023, YRP:
Increased opportunities to develop and achieve unit priorities as a collaborative effort between leaders and members
Provided members with added learning opportunities in leadership programs
Recruitment and Retention – Our Community
To promote a people-first approach to recruit, retain and enhance talent to serve our community, YRP will:

Promote programs and events to attract and mentor potential candidates
in 2023, YRP:
Facilitated virtual information sessions with potential candidates of Information Management positions
Implemented one-on-one mentorship program for candidates interested in becoming a police officer
Partnered with post-secondary institutions to ensure curriculum for specialized fields is aligned with position requirements
