Advancing inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility through our Equity Audit
An equity audit seeks to ensure every YRP member and every York Region citizen served is seen, heard and valued
York Regional Police is currently conducting an internal equity audit aimed at promoting fairness and collaboration within the service and fostering connections with the communities it serves. The audit, which is scheduled to conclude by late spring 2025, includes a review of internal organizational and strategic documents, policies and procedures related to employment practices and service delivery.
“The Equity Audit is more than a review—it’s a commitment to a more inclusive and equitable police service.”
Inspector Charles Byham, Professionalism, Leadership and Inclusion
The audit also includes an assessment of YRP’s recruitment, training and inclusion practices and an evaluation of public-facing programs like services and events. YRP partnered with the Diversity Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University to conduct the review.
YRP’s Equity Audit supports the goals of our current Strategic Plan, which aims to strengthen inclusion, belonging and trust across the organization. Its findings will provide actionable recommendations to improve internal equity and enhance service delivery.
“The Equity Audit aims to ensure that our internal practices are fair and equitable when it comes to recruitment, promotion, and professional development,” said Dr. Sarah Rogers, Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility. “It will also make our service to the public more inclusive and responsive, building stronger trust between YRP and the communities we serve.”

YRP staff members have had an opportunity to participate in the audit through surveys, interviews, and focus groups conducted by representatives from the Diversity Institute. These focus groups represented an opportunity for members to share their perspectives related to advancing equity in employment processes and in YRP’s service delivery. Members will be impacted by the findings and recommendations that emerge from the audit, as the organization works to advance fairness for its members and in the services provided to the community.
“The Equity Audit is more than a review—it’s a commitment to a more inclusive and equitable police service,” said Inspector Charles Byham, Professionalism, Leadership and Inclusion. “In the end, it will help us strengthen our internal culture and build greater trust with the community.”
