Safety and Well-Being
Our Community
in 2023, YRP:
- Partnered with the John Howard Society to implement the Adult Pre-Charge Diversion program across York Region, to hold parties directly accountable for low-level offences and direct those who may be at risk of recidivism to social programs
- Continued to foster partnerships with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General in order to ensure best practices are incorporated into processes that will best serve the community
- Provided recommendations, through the York Region Traffic Safety Strategy Committee, for new and enhanced traffic infrastructure to help reduce injury and fatal collisions to ensure safe streets
Safety and Well-Being
Our People
in 2023, YRP:
- Implemented new technologies, such as eNotes, Automated Licence Plate Readers and new Business Intelligence dashboards, to assist members with inputting and accessing data relating to initiatives and investigations to effectively develop strategies, prepare for court, and enhance safety
- Continued implementing member development programs which include specialized training, mentorship, and opportunities to try new roles within the organization
- Continued promotion of psychological health through programs such as peer support, meaningful work for members working with restrictions, and the hiring of a family support clinician
Recruitment and Retention
Our Community
in 2023, YRP:
- Implemented a one-on-one mentorship program for candidates interested in becoming a police officer
- Attended various fairs and community events to provide recruiting information
- Reviewed and updated testing requirements based on the skills and abilities specific to job positions

in 2023, YRP:
- Launched the Future of Leadership in Policing program, in partnership with Schulich ExecEd, providing leadership development opportunities for members
- Increased schedule flexibility by introducing flex-shift starts to vary work schedules for frontline officers
- Increased opportunities to develop and achieve unit priorities as a collaborative effort between leaders and members
Inclusion and Belonging
OuR Commmunity
in 2023, YRP:
- Hosted forums and information sessions with vulnerable communities to discuss hate-motivated crimes
- Formed an Indigenous Awareness working group focused on increasing positive engagement with the Indigenous community
- Enhanced relationships with faith-based organizations, including mosques and synagogues, to continue collaboration on programs and services for the community
Inclusion and Belonging

in 2023, YRP:
- Secured a consultant to conduct an Equity Audit and to review our current processes to determine strategies for promoting fairness and collaboration within our organization
- Continued engagement with the Executive Leadership Team through the District Platoon Visit initiative to help identify opportunities for member improvement
- Developed and implemented the 2023-2025 Inclusive Policing Action Plan which maps out various strategies that will continue to foster an inclusive workplace
INnovation and Continuous Improvement
OuR Commmunity
in 2023, YRP:
- Introduced a pilot for online motor vehicle collision reporting of minor accidents in Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King Township, Newmarket, Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville
- YRP district leaders continued to regularly meet with municipal councils, local politicians and community leaders and members to present key crime trends and support crime prevention through the promotion of the Community Safety Data Portal
- Completed a review on YRP’s frontline policing models in order to implement efficient use of police resources that would ensure the safety and security of the community
INnovation and Continuous Improvement
OuR PEOPLE
in 2023, YRP:
- Re-configured various service areas and reallocated people resources to meet operational needs that will best serve the community (e.g., transferred members from the Customer Service Unit to newly formed Digital Evidence Management Unit)
- Implemented the automated upload of digital evidence to associated incident reports that support investigations and disclosure of evidence for court purposes
- Hired a data scientist to develop strategies that will improve YRP’s ability to make evidence-based decisions in police operations, resources, crime trends and member wellness
