York Region makes the shift to online collision reporting
The new portal allows motorists in a collision to cut the line and report online
The York Regional Police online collision reporting portal transformed from a pilot project to a complete solution in 2024, as motorists from across the region were granted the ability to file a report.
The new process reflects a move to improve the customer experience and efficiency in the police service, allowing officers more time to respond to calls for service.
Motorists are still to call 9-1-1 for any collisions involving an injury, criminal act or other criteria which can be found at yrp.ca/CollisionReport.
YRP is the first police service in Canada to implement a fully digital collision reporting model.
In conjunction with this change, the Collision Reporting Centre in Richmond Hill closed in February of 2025, making the online method the only way to report applicable collisions. Motorists no longer need to wait in lines or rely on reporting centre hours of operation.
Now, drivers only need to take plenty of pictures of the damage to their vehicle and exchange information with anyone else involved in the collision before submitting it via the online portal.
Next, they must call the non-emergency line to receive an incident number from a call taker who can help guide them through the process if necessary.
So far, customers who have used the online reporting model have reported a satisfaction rate above 85 percent.
